LIVERTON DERBY FOR LORD MAYOR'S FUND?

JULY 18, 1944. The Liverpool Echo

Ranger's Notes

Followers of Everton and Liverpool will be glad to know that last year's pre-season “Liverton” practice Derby is likely to be repeated. This is the match which raised £1,900 for the Lord Mayor's War Fund last August and gave spectators a grand foretaste of the delights in store when Liverpool two down, scored five goals in the last eight minutes. Liverpool's board have already decided their willingness to stage such game on August 19, and the suggestion is now awaiting the consideration of Everton's directors at their next meeting. As Everton are equally anxious with Liverpool to help such a deserving cause, I think we can take it as fairly certain that the match will be “on.” As last year's game was at Anfield, this time Goodison Park will doubtless be the venue. If this arrangement is confirmed it will mean that the match between a combined Liverpool and Everton side and an Army-cum R.A.F team, which was proposed after last May's Services game, and was tentatively fixed for August 19, will have to be held over until later. In any case it is as well that there should be a postponement of the Services game, as Blackpool will probably Tottenham in a charity game on August 19, which would mean that some of the most attractive Services players would not be available.

Wee Alex has not kicked ball since being injured in a representative match at Edinburgh at the back-end of last season, but his injured ankle has mended well. EVERTON F.C. JUNIOR TRIALS

July 29, 1944. The Evening Express

During the preparations for the football season which starts in England on August 26 we have not heard much about Everton's prospects, but during the month of August you can look forward to intense activity at Goodison Park. Junior trials will start next week. Secretary Mr. Theo Kelly has his boys all lined up and will give numerous applicants their tests in a series of games behind closed doors. Mr. Kelly's is convinced that the newcomers added to the boys who were with the club last season, will give him plenty of junior strength. And it should not be long before Mr. Kelly is able to announce his first team line-up. There has been plenty of hard work behind the scenes, and it is possible Mr. Kelly may have some pleasant surprises for us.

•  Note Everton played a Baseball team right though the close season, many Everton players involved in the game.
